Both my school and college used to lay old boxes in the skip in easy
reach so that people could take them if they wanted. They felt it was a
waste of hardware just dumping it in a landfill as a lot of the stuff
was still viable for use as desktop machines (I've seen a skip with 20
266mhz celeron mini-towers and recently a bunch of P3 desktops) there
just seems a lot of hassle involved in people taking old hardware via
the "front door".
