After far too long I discovered that Debian has packages called
automake, automake1.7, and several others.

The autoconf in unstable doesn't work with automake as automake is too
old. Installing auomake1.7 seems to help.

I'm still stuck getting either of the {AC_|AX_}CREATE_STDINT_H macros
working.

config.log is zero help here, as it just gives expected output plus
"configure: exit 258"

What I think I need to know is why autoconf objects to macro names
beginning AC_ , is it just name space protection, or is it something
more subtle.

A bit of fiddling suggests autoreconf is overwriting aclocal.m4, so
running aclocal as you suggest appears to be pointless (this week! it
didn't do this on prior versions of autoconf).

If I stick the macro in acinclude.m4 it gets included, and I get a
different error ---- argh.... I guess that is progress of some sort.

All this just to get a portable 64 bit integer types (again)....

Simon, very tempted to go back to his own hack for 64 bit integer types
based around NEED_STDINT macro.
