Coding, seems to me a very distinct skill. Obviously a good technical
education helps, maths, algorithmns etc, but one of the best coders I
knew flunked out of an engineering degree.

I think any fairy intelligent person can master the basics, I did, and
with practice I even became very fluent in one programming language.

But some people seem just inherently more productive as programmers,
often they are those who fit the stereotype of poor social skills. I'm
not labelling them high functioning autistics, but I'm willing to bet it
is something similar.

That isn't to say others can't attain similar levels of productivity, I
suspect it could well be a boredom thing in terms of putting in the
practice.

The worrying thing is how many people coding really don't know terribly
much about what they are doing*, or the language in which they are
coding. Which short of being a "natural" is the surest way to increase
your productivity.

I think it is too solitary a pursuit.
