I wasn't too keen on the smilies, either, and it was one of the things I changed, but not knowing how to save in Vi, I couldn't actually try it! :-( And don't tell me I should learn Vi in case this happens again, why should I when I am so infrequently forced to use it? However, I ruled these rogue characters out as a cause of the problems, as this lilo.conf had seemingly worked perfectly before - I didn't realise it was using the "hard coded" failsafe, which would explain why it wasn't working. Thanks for your help, it might be academic now but at least I have learnt something.
