I've always found it dangerous to assume anything.

I have an Ati card which as I said wors perfectly with earlier versions of
X.

Only when the drivers got updated did I have problems using the r128 driver

Incidentally I have several friends using nvidia linux drivers whpo have no
problems installing either via rpm or source and find them a lot more stable
under X than windows.

I assume you have an nvidia card? And you encounter problems running
their proprietary driver?
