Assuming you only had 'lo' in the rest of the output, yes. If eth0 showed up,
please re-post the output.

That's correct so the problem is elswhere.

SourceForge records a fair bit of aggro about removing Firestarter but no
solutions. These ideas were all suggested in the mailing list archive but no
indication is given that any succeeded - in fact although some seem perfectly
reasonable and none would appear to be particularly risky to the rest of the
system, some of these didn't work for all contributors. It's worth trying
each one though - the original queries in each case were slightly different
to yours as contributors were trying to achieve an UPGRADE not uninstall.

Look for and remove /etc/rc.d/init.d/firestarter script since this is
where its trying to start from on bootup. Also, if you had to modify any
files in your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts directory, you will want to
manually edit those files and remove the firestarter line(s).

My approach is not much different, but I have caught problems more times
 than I care to remember:

 1. find / -name "firestarter*" | more
 2. look over the output in the above command and make sure it contains
what you are hoping it should
 3. find / -name "firestarter*" | xargs rm -f
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=1307617&forum_id=6322

Try deleting the directory '/etc/firestarter' and all it's contents
before re-installing. The files in that directory are not part of the
rpm, instead, they are generated by Firestarter, and as such, they won't
be removed by a 'rpm -e'. Hope this helps.

The 'operation not permitted' error sounds like a security setting - Mandrake
did that to me once when I fiddled too much with an old version of the
Control Center. Check to see if your version still has a security level
setting and try lowering that - it should reset all associated security
scripts. It's the Mandrake Control Center - not the user one but the one that
requires the root password before opening. I found it in the Configuration
menu on Mandrake9. What distro are you using?

Is there room on your hard drive for a second distro?
Have you got a complete backup of your home directory (including all the .kde
and .gnome etc configuration directories that show up with `ls -a` ?

May be worth joining the firestarter mailing list too.

Also found this:
http://firestarter.sourceforge.net/manual/persistence.php
Firestarter comes with an SysV style init script for managing the firewall.
The script provides the following functions:

start: starts the firewall.
stop: stops the firewall.
status: gives an detailed dump of the inner state of the firewall.
restart: stops, then starts the firewall.
panic: halts the firewall.

The functions can be invoked by appending them as parameters to the script.
For example, on a Red Hat / Mandrake distribution you can start the firewall
by running /etc/init.d/firestarter start. Most distributions also include
tools, like chkconfig, to manage the service scripts. These tools allow you
to change the boot priority and many other parameters of the services.
