I've tried eching the LD_LIBRARY_PATH and that gives me '/usr/lib' as
expected.

Looking at the config.log, it is apparent that the problem lies with
configure not finding the C++ header files (e.g. malloc.h). I have tried to
specify the path of these in configure:

FreeBSD#
./configure --libdir=/usr/lib --includedir=/usr/include --oldincludedir=/usr
/include

but this makes no difference.
