I don't agree with everything Dan writes, but he is absolutely
clear on the roles of different DNS servers, not least he uses
two different programs, one to serve authoritative data, and one
to resolve specific requests.

I'm a radical, if we were starting again you wouldn't build a
public root name server infrastructure, as it isn't really
needed, and just sits around looking like a target.

But then some people would have built a flat namespace
(allegedly) and other radical variations, but DNS can wait till
SMTP has been overhauled ;-)
