Just a quick query:

I currently have one hub connecting three machines. If I connect a second hub
to the first hub, do I need a different cable or do I switch on the 'Uplink'
button on the hub (and which hub)?

1->Hub1
2->Hub1->Hub2->4
3->Hub1

Will that just work?

(There will be more than just 1 machine on the second hub eventually.)

(I want to keep the two hubs as one is upstairs and one is downstairs! It'll
save running multiple Cat5 cables up and down.)

Depends on the hardware to be honest... My hubs are running from hub 1 to hub 1 via the uplink on hub 1 to a normal port on hub 2 for example.. this allows me to cascade another hub to hub 2 via hub 2's uplink port and a normal port on hub 3.. (phew...)

Yes this normally works just fine.. some hubs i have come across need a crossover cable to do uplinking.. (easy to make)
