Not virtual server AFAIK. The tools for 2.2 kernels were part of
Beowolf, but they are in the kernel since 2.4.7 I believe.

Common practice with some load balancers at ISPs to have
multiple servers with the same IP address - makes me cringe as
well - guess it makes DR easy ;-)

But yes if the solution is at layer 2, you apply 1 IP address to
all NICs.

Seems the magic phrase is "bonding", similar to ISDN channel
bonding.

The switch obviously needs to support this - read the manual or
contact the vendor - usually best to start these queries with I
have a "switch XXX" and am looking to buy more but our technical
guys say it has to support Linux.

I have to say I got defeated by switch firmware issues last time
I tried this between a NetAppliance and a third party switch,
but I wouldn't be surprised to learn Linux does it better, as
the switch vendors can always do Linux kernel patches if their
flavour is different ;-), and that was a few years ago.

The Devil is in the detail, as so often.
