Now I regard one of my areas of significant ignorance to be how one gets the 
latest version of Kmail running without replacing the whole of KDE - or even 
if this is possible or desirable.

I'm also unclear if there is an easy way to download and install KDE in a 
simple safe and easy fashion - it seems to be available as many packages with 
no overall installation system.
