Can anyone reccommend a good backup utlity for Linux that can backup to a

Tar is ubiquitous, so it's easy to get the data off on an other
system. I tend not to rely on "backup solutions" if I can get away
with it. If you're doing incremental backups, that's a slightly
different story, but if you're backing up a data directory or some
collection of directories, I'd recommend tar wrapped in a tight little
shell script.

try cpio !!! man cpio that should point you in a direction , well that is
the one i use anyway

Yes indeed. cpio has the same ubiquitous benefits.
