There isn't a simple answer, since it can depend on your chipset and
BIOS details. If you have problems detecting PnP hardware or you get
errors about IRQs not being assigned to PCI cards try changing it,
worst case senario you'll need to manually assign PCI IRQs.

Many thanks for all the replies.  I did try once (SuSE v7.0  I think) to 
install with the PnP deselected.  SuSE installed happily but Windows 98 on 
the other half of the box collapsed!  I had to reinstall SuSE, with the PnP 
option on, to avoid this problem. 

Unfortunately I'm stuck with a dual boot system until my parallel type scanner  
gives up the ghost and I can drop Windows completely.  However,  Christmas is 
approaching ......
