thinking xdm sessions.

Are those seriously old pentiums?

Unless they're really too feeble for desktop use (eg < 32Mb RAM),
you could perfectly well run real apps on them, just so long as
you steer clear of certain heavyweight modern desktop environments.

I seem to remember someone was a bit of a terminal server man round
here and I was wondering of there was a standard linux config for just
turning a box into an xdm client.

Can't help you there, though someone else already posted a suggestion.
