Re: [LUG] A bit OT - Networking/Security

Hi all.

I have to come up with some details for putting in a network at work
connected to a broadband connection. Probably will be 4 machines
running M$
as the client machines.

BT have quoted over £2k for firewall/antivirus which seens a bit
excessive to
me, esp as I have become used to the free software with Linux on my
home
machine.

Can anyone give me some ideas what to look at as I am basically a
network
novice - we have the technical people from ActNow coming in next week
and I
need to have some options ready. The main points I need to address
are:

1/ Firewall - Hardware/software.
2/ Delivering e-mail to individual machines + a catchall account.
3/ Keeping private files private & secure.
4/ Allowing relatively safe access to the internet.

Thnx for the help,

Mark Harvey

You could try one of the dedecated firewall products like www.ipcop.org.
I would suggest putting it on a low end new box rather than a bit of recycled 'junk'
It will run OK on the recycled junk, but you will probably have less trouble in the long run.

Of course you try it on the junk to see how you get on.

the hammer. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.
