Ackshully - most open source software is written by professional 
graduates.

Most of the best software that makes the internet work is either public 
domain or Open Source - See the recent lwn story on the survey of OSS 
developers - almost all were full time programmers, not students or school 
children.

Also IBM, SUN, HP, Lucent, MIT, etc's finest contribute code to OSS.

So yes open source software is written by the best programmers in the 
world.. of course most of them write proprietary crap to pay their wages 
but they get to put quality and innovation ahead of time-to-market and 
marketechture on OSS.
