Bearing in mind the longer boot process with Linux, you really don't want

Longer? With my dual boot win2k/Linux machine, Linux boots *much*
quicker.

Mandrake 8.1 vs Win98SE on this Dell machine and boot-up and shut-down take
longer. Mind you, that is comparing it to completion of login procedure too.
Both pause for use login and Windows takes longer to complete login than
Linux but Linux, overall, does appear to take longer.

On the laptop, RedHat 7.2 vs WinME, the shutdown is disconcertingly fast on
WinME but on start-up it isn't a fair comparison as WinME has far fewer
services available once started.
