With the risk of sounding anal, it's worth noting that jo* may need
to be quoted as shell escaping may interfer with it. I was very
confuzed a while back by it, after a long coding spree no sleep, and
too much caffine, had a problem like this:

lister:/home/trek/trII/src# dpkg -l mysql*
No packages found matching mysql.c.

lister:/home/trek/trII/src# ls mysql*
mysql.c

router:/home/trek/trII/src# dpkg -l "mysql*"
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
*snip*
un mysql <none> (no description available)
un mysql-base <none> (no description available)

I was so tired it must have taken me all of 10 minutes to work it out
;p
