Perhaps VXFS would be a better comparison. I don't think it is NTFS's fault, but a recent IIS security problem was due to the backward compatibility to 8.3 names, which Microsoft suggested switching off as a work around. But the lesson is clear backward compatibility adds complexity. Complexity is an enemy of security. On the file system question, ReiserFS got a bashing on the Postfix list, which was resolved down to "it produces a spurious warning messages", "it is fixed in the latest release"...... Now Reiser's plans are much more sophisticated, and more like NTFS, but on steriods, although I can't help thinking the simplicity, and elegance, of the McCrusick filesystem (The original UNIX one) was one of the reasons for the success of UNIX.
