I'm certainly no X expert (sorry), but this did actually work for me. See the 
Mandrake 8.0 on a laptop review to see why. And it was between two different 
machines too. The absolute proviso is, BACKUP the XF85Config file FIRST!!!! 
Just copy it somewhere (anywhere) into the /home tree.
