[LUG] tgz files

I know this is probably a real basic question but how do I uncompress .tgz
files,  I have tried

tar xvzf filename.tgz
gzip -d filename.tgz

but neither work,  the former is for uncompressing tar.gz files,  so i think
I have the wrong option.
