[LUG] Newbie Kernel Compiling problem

Hi,

I've just taken my first steps into the big world of compiling a Kernel.
I've had a fair bit of experience using my Linux box, but I've just
upgraded it with a USB card and needed a new Kernel, so I got the 2.4.3
code and followed the Quick steps in the Kernel HOWTO, and voila on newly
compiled Kernel.

My problem is that when I boot with the new Kernel...

1) I get a NFS -lockd error saying Invalid Argument and the service fails
to start.
and
2) lpd says cannot open lp device /dev/lp0 - no such device.

I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me what if anything I've done wrong.

Oh yes...
I'm running RH7.0
lpd -V reports...
LPRng-3.6.22, Kerberos5, Copyright 1988-2000 Patrick Powell,

If there is any other information needed I can let anyone know.

Hope someone can help,

Tom.
