Re: [LUG] Office Suite for Linux ( Mandrake )

>>
I've just migrated from Win98 to Linux Mandrake. I need to find a
replacement for Microsfot Office that will run under Mandrake and that will
allow me to import my old docs and letters from Win98.
Any recommendations?

It depends what software you sed in windows, it was probably Office though.
There is a prorgam called "Star Office" which is similar - you can get it at
(If i remember correctly) www.staroffice.com
<<

that's a HUGE download!! Star Office is bundled with some of the Mandrake
distro's - possibly a good reason to buy a Mandrake Power Pack (I think) or
Deluxe version instead of the vanilla version. Usually >3 CD's, maybe 6-8.
Check the pack info or the Mandrake site for details of which pack includes
Star Office without any bits you don't need.

Alternatively, you could borrow an old copy of Mandrake 7.0 Complete (mine's
already on loan) - etc. Star Office is certainly capable of the job but it
does need good hardware. It has the advantage of portability though - built
in Java.

Anyone got a spare Star Office CD that they can make available?

Alternatively, Mandrake comes with a few Office applications courtesy of KDE
and Gnome. Depends on your requirements, but they'll run faster than Star.
KOffice is quite good:
"KOffice - An integrated office suite for word processing, spreadsheets,
presentations, flowcharting, drawing and image manipulation. "

"AbiWord - is a lean and fast full-featured word processor perfect for the
most common office tasks. "

These should already be on your distro CD's - even the 2 CD versions.
