Do you get any sound in games or can you play wav files?,  if not try
running sndconfig and set up you sound card,  there is a link on the control
panel or try running from an xterm window,  you may need to be logged in as
root,  however if you are a normal user then it will probably ask for the
root password so it can run the program.
