Which made me think that one might send a stream of spoofed 
"unique log ID references" back to the bastards concerned, 
devaluing their lists of "live" email addresses.

The main tactic against spam is to reduce the margin of profit.  
It is small already, so anything that reduces it further 
contributes to driving them out of business.
