Urm - after much searching high and low, and finally
discovering that "sleepycat.com" is the place where the
Berkeley database lives and not just some obscure commercial
database application.

I finally found the amazingly complex answer....

db_upgrade filename.ddb

Ran this 5 times against all the files, and as if by magic
it all works again. 

Insert appropriate embarassed silence
