I would recommend looking at:

RFC2554 - SMTP Service Extension for Authentication
http://sunsite.org.uk/rfc/rfc2554.txt

Don't know what mail daemons support this, but as it was written by a guy
at Netscape, it's a fair bet that it is what is used in Navigator et al.

As for interoperating with delivery operations, it shouldn't bve a
problem.  I would have thought that most implmentations would be smart
enough to allow mail for the local host (or stuff in sendmail.cw), until
the user has authenticated, at which point relaying is enabled for that
sesion.
