[LUG] Linux consoles and proxies

Subject: RE: [LUG] BIND and non 255.255.255.0 netmasks.

Having digested John and Simon's mails, I think I am perhaps creating
problems here as I cannot be delegated to. As far as I am aware the IP
range in question are private addresses and this network is only connected
to the net via a web proxy.
<<

Now this caught my eye today because I've ditched Microsoft Internet
Connection Sharing in preference for NetProxy.

My config:
No linmodems, no external modems, currently both internal PCI modems (1
fitted, one redundant) are not supported and I don't fancy paying for an
external.
Windows98SE running on the faster machine with the winmodem, ZoneAlarm Pro
and NetProxy. (ZoneAlarm still in use because netproxy is still new and I
trust ZA more than netproxy so far. Netproxy firewall is set to ignore LAN.

All ethernet connections are working perfectly, even the FTP which caused so
many problems with delays - it is now instant. Came down to DNS in the end.
I currently have linux setup on 192.168.0.2 and DNS name server1 as
192.168.0.1 - the proxy. I've also tried setting 192.168.0.1 as the default
gateway. Should I need DNS and routing/gateways at all to connect to the
proxy? Disabling the gateway and DNS still allows ping and lynx to connect
to the Windows machine over the LAN. Once connected though, I need the
gateway. Konqueror works without DNS or gateways - it finds the proxy as
intended. Enabling DNS alone leaves ping reporting that the network is
unreachable but it does report the IP, so that's working. Enabling the
gateway alone just leaves ping hanging - the IP is found but no result. 100%
packet loss. But DNS was OK, must have been via the gateway. So enabled
routing (no DNS) and: 100% packet loss. No good. Can you tell I'm confused!!

I have configured Netscape, KMail and Konqueror to use the proxy using the
IP 192.168.0.1 - the IP of the Windows machine. Works fine - actually faster
 than before.

How do I get the shell and lynx in particular to use the proxy?

I want to set http, ping, telnet and ftp to use the proxy from the console
window. (http = lynx).
