[LUG] LDE: Mandrake 7.2 - Quick review

The release of Mandrake 8 has just happened, so this is so timely *8-)

Do we have any dedicated Mandrake 7.2 users coming to the Linux Day
Event in Exeter?

I just installed Mandrake 7.2 onto my Laptop, just so I know what we are
in for.

Install was simplest ever - although a "Back function" would have saved
some time. The XFree86 config worked (when I went for 4.x rather than
3.3.6) but did mess up the screen a bit on my hardware if you got the
answers wrong, making it hard to continue.

Still it is the first install for a while where I could get the right
Xfree86 setting without vi'ing XF86Config afterwards, and it lets me
specify whether to run X on startup.

Lots of Penguins - make it a fun and colourful install/distro.

Noticable work has been done on security. Options giving security level,
and control over which processes are started, as well as shipping a
non-sendmail MTA, and other little touches.

The "Expert" install didn't ask any difficult questions, unless you
regard remembering 8 character passwords as tricky.

The Drak config tools are okay, but tend to be defeated easily. For
example the networking tools recognised the wireless cards but don't
configure them (Okay it is minority hardware), but didn't get me a
loopback adaptor either.

Nice selection of packages - lot of the 'extras' I usually install went
in as part of the standard install. (Although I still can't get webmin
to answer requests on port 10000 - although it is listening).

I could become a Mandrake convert....

If we are giving out Mandrake 7.2 and Redhat 7.0 - we will need someone
to give a talk explaining the differences, or at least a little
background.... Maybe a demo install?

Any takers...
