IRC..

Windows: Pirch (www.pirchat.com) - far better than mIRC IMO.
Linux: xchat (www.xchat.org) (for X) or BitchX (www.bitchx.org) (curses).

Failing that, ircii or EPIC are curses/CLI-based alternatives without all the
extra gubbins that BitchX shoves in.  Search freshmeat for details.
