I wouldn't expect too much of Debian and apt-get, it
may be great in a lot of ways but last time I tried
upgrading KDE with it I had a lot of problems and
eventually had to downgrade again (which wasn't easy
either).
Incidentally; Debian installation isn't as tough as
it's reputation suggests - at least it wasn't for me.
If I can do it I'd think just about anyone (with a
little sense) could.
