Okay, I have just spoken to the web team about some of these issues.

As said, they do not look after the portals, that is an apps team area.
For the general web pages, from the Uni's web pages, they are tested
with various MS browsers as well as mozilla, opera, Netscape (versions 4
and 7), lynx and Mac browsers.

Trying to access the student portal from lynx worked fine - it was
demonstrated to me. However you have to have cookies enabled, which may
explain the authorisation error.
