You are.

I think you still have a choice of kernels ('cat /proc/version' versus
'apt-cache search kernel-image' IIRC).

But was there anyway you could have triggered the problem, not that I
think it is an excuse for the OS, but might be easier not to throw a
spanner in the works than make a spanner proof machine.
