Don't scare the man.

Have you considered using PHP or Perl. Perl msy be a bit abstruse but PHP
has good modern features and might appeal more to your students.

PHP is not a programming language. It is very limited application, which
does scale and has a history of security problems.

Perl... don't get me started.
