Having used dd to copy all the contents of /dev/hda to a new /dev/hdb

how do I persuade the new drive that it is much bigger?

This is part of a large upgrade, and if driven to it I'll just start from scratch, but then I have to transfer ownership of files and IDs and so on.

Now, next question is SuSE 8.2 or SuSE 9.0. Got both.

Well, i can see a few options here..

A) Create the partitions on hdb as you want them, backup (using tar) the contents of /dev/hda and restore the backup to hdb
B) Use LVM next time...
C) Use ext2resize
D) Start from scratch...
E) Create a load of larger partitions on the new disk, mount them as required...

Personally I would go for option A much nicer... (and I have done it a number of times before) Also if you use LVM you can resize the partitions at a later date without loosing data (in theory)

dd, great for mirroring one device to another.. not too hot as a backup tool in this situ...
