their linux problems, lays on the next Linux Format coverdisk.

You should never fix problems (or upgrade) by re-installing the entire
system. It's silly, but if you are coming from a Windows background
unfortunately this may be an ingrained strategy for you.

You should be able roll back packages to defaults. You should be able to
upgrade your packages.

At least I can. And if you want to know how, read the apt-howto.
