I have seen similar goings on when i ran out of inodes. Also to a "df -i" to
check inode useage on your partitions.

Yeah, I thought of that, but none of the partitions (/, /home and /var) are
completely full - the worst is the root partition with only 60Mb left.  That
should be OK though, shouldn't it?

How can I find out where the swap is, so that I can make sure it is on
/home?
