Mdk. (or Debian3) - there aren't any drivers available to configure it.
(as far as I can tell).

However, it looks like a binary driver is available on Mdk9:

hub.c: USB new device connect on bus2/1, assigned device number 2
usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x483/0x7554) is not claimed by any active driver.
slmdm: version 2.7.5 Oct 31 2002 13:35:47 (Smart Link Ltd.).
slmdm: country set is 0xb5 (USA).

Now all I need to do is work out where the modem is under /dev/

Is there a way of working out which /dev/ link should be used just from the output of dmesg and /var/log/messages above?

I've never understood how to find USB devices once plugged in - LinuxFormat tutorials always seem to use devices that explain where they are attached but I can't see how to get the same information for my devices. I can find no hint about where under /dev/ this USB modem is available. It should be easier than this.

I have the internal version of that modem on my Laptop. The driver creates /dev/ttySL0. It's probably the same for the USB version...
