Yes, (although once configured, the permissions may still need to be set this way), it sounds like you will need to do some work with modprobe. Take a look (as root again) in by using ls: # ls /lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/sound/pci Then use modprobe (if the module isn't workable, you'll get a long error message, make a note not to try that module again and move on to the next.) On MDK9, I got: ac97/ nm256/ snd-ens1370.o.gz snd-ice1712.o.gz snd-sonicvibes.o.gz ali5451/ rme9652/ snd-ens1371.o.gz snd-intel8x0.o.gz snd-via686.o.gz cs46xx/ snd-als4000.o.gz snd-es1938.o.gz snd-maestro3.o.gz snd-via8233.o.gz emu10k1/ snd-cmipci.o.gz snd-es1968.o.gz snd-rme32.o.gz trident/ korg1212/ snd-cs4281.o.gz snd-fm801.o.gz snd-rme96.o.gz ymfpci/ You didn't say which sound card your machine has, but what you should look for is a .o.gz file, preferably in one of the subdirectories like emu10k1 or trident (I think the snd- ones are less specific and therefore might not offer all the 'features' of your card but I'm probably wrong on that). e.g. # modprobe emu10k1 # modprobe trident This may well create the /dev/dsp device for you. If not, we'll try again (just let us know what sound card you have - either from hardrake or Windows).
also went via " look & feel, system notifications et. play sound. got same response. logically must relate to some failure in the Mandrake 9. install. Is it feasible these sound items were missed on the cd??
