woo woo, perl 5.8 is out!

two things that stand out from the changelog...

Restricted Hashes

A restricted hash is restricted to a certain set of keys, no keys
outside the set can be added.  Also individual keys can be restricted
so that the key cannot be deleted and the value cannot be changed.
No new syntax is involved: the Hash::Util module is the interface.


Switch, by Damian Conway, has been added.  Just by saying

   use Switch;

you have C<switch> and C<case> available in Perl.

   use Switch;

   switch ($val) {

               case 1          { print "number 1" }
               case "a"        { print "string a" }
               case [1..10,42] { print "number in list" }
               case (@array)   { print "number in list" }
               case /\w+/      { print "pattern" }
               case qr/\w+/    { print "pattern" }
               case (%hash)    { print "entry in hash" }
               case (\%hash)   { print "entry in hash" }
               case (\&sub)    { print "arg to subroutine" }
               else            { print "previous case not true" }
   }
