Well, if you type "apt-get update perl" it will try and update all

Blame your shitty connection. If you just want to update perl, do a
dselect update as usual, but do a apt-get install perl instead of
update afterwards. :)

There is a surprisinly good apt-get howto(!) I learnt a fair few things
even though I have been using the tools for a fair bit.

I hear you, but I wanted something easy for them.

easy? open software is never easy. i am fighting a war here, for not
just me to use it but for everyone else too. :)
