hi 

from what i remember reading a common approach is that the modelling is 
carried out on SGI machines running irix/maya - but the rendering of the 
actual images uses farms of linux machines using the program pixar 
renderman - there was an article in PCW about it recently - it had a 
picture of shrek on the front - good film too!
