A distribution is the name given to a set of software that is brought together for a particular purpose, it includes an operating system, but typically includes a lot more software. Whilst there are hundreds of special purpose distributions for specific hardware, most of derived from one of the other distributions, so a little overview of the main distributions allows one to orientate oneself.
