Another Windows User Rescued!

Last night I spent the evening at a friend's house. His Windows machine was quite poorly, blue screen of death when it booted. Could not get to the rescue partition.

I used a Linux Mint 13 (Maya) DVD to boot the machine. It was surprisingly fast, even running from the DVD it appeared faster than what I remember of the Windows install.

Screen Command

Recently I have been made aware of the terminal command, "screen".

As the same eludes, it is a program which permits you to have many bash (or other program/shell) sessions open from the terminal. It's great!

Linux just keeps getting better and better and.... :-)

First Kubuntu Install

I have just been around to a friends house. Trashed his windows hard disk and installed kubuntu 10.04.

It is the first time I have ever looked at KDEi. It seemed very professional. My friend really seems to like it and is going to be up most of the night I think! He was so excited about having the _choice_ of what software he wanted - for free! haha!.

Awesome :-)

Linux Is Not Windows. An excellent article which answers typical questions/frustrations of new users. Explanations are clear and well reasoned. Well worth a look.

Added to useful links page :-)

Added a link on the useful links page to a GNUi/Linux laptop buying guide, aimed at novice users. It seems to include some reasonable advice (in my opinion, as a novice myself).

It also shares an opinion about suitable distributions and possible laptop vendors.

Mist Desktop Theme

I have just changed my desktop theme from Crux to Mist (in Ubuntu 9.04). I really like the change. Amazing how such little changes seem to make a big difference. Gone are 3D "bevelled" effects. My desktop is now much sharper and combined with the fact that I turned off all desktop effects, it is very fast too (not that it was slow before).

...I must try out some different desktop environments at some point too...

... and perhaps have several different ones installed (on the same pc), for when I fancy a change...

nite all

In danger of running before I can walk, today I created a useful links page on the DCGLUG web site.

http://www.dcglug.org.uk/node/95

Currently, it is merely a few of my own personal book marks. Hopefully, others will add to it.

Enjoy. :-)
