You'll need to make sure you run a getty on the serial port. This will give you the ability to log in via the serial port. Are you intending that this should be the machine console (ie no vga card/montior)? If so you'll need to compile "support for console on serial port" into your kernel and pass something like console=ttyS1 to the kernel from your bootloader.
