So now to the famed "apt-get install" command. I am not a veteran command line hacker and prefer the comfort of a GUI. My weapon of choice in this regard is KDE so "apt-get install kde" have a cup of tea and watch some TV and it's done.
Having just built a P4 3GHz box from scratch I decided to install Debian. The one thing that has deterred me so far is that, only having a 56k modem makes life on Planet Debian difficult. Bought the Official Debian DVD ages ago and just couldn't be bothered with all the fiddling, command line hacking and massive updates to keep it in reasonably current. I therefore, decided to use a Debian based distro which would at least be updated at fairly regular intervals. Not being a cutting edge type of user this is no problem. First of all I tried the freebie Lindows disk and did not like its "commercial" slant and "Walt Disney" style. In desperation (before returning to SuSE) I tried Libranet. First of all, I installed the download CD of an earlier version as a trial and was impressed. I then bought a CD set of the latest version from Scan and installed it a few days ago. A smooth, quick, painless install and very user friendly; similar in ease to SuSE and Mandrake. Once installed, the GUI "Adminmenue" is a delight to use, no apt-get stuff. Just type in the name of the packet you want - and off it goes. As a bonus there is an excellent forum which even notifies the poster by email of any replies. I'm now a devoted Debian (well sort of), user and will stick with Libranet as my desktop system. Incidentally, Libranet found and set up my new DVD R/W quite happily on K3B, but I now have to fork out for a new version of "Nero" for Windows ME!
