The cables arrived today, and the project was successful. I hope to

If anyone's considering doing it, go for it. It was surprising easy to
install, and
get it up and running.

If enough people want to do it, we could look at maybe running an
install day...

Imagine that, we could get some cool press for the GNU/LUG...

A mass of users, all converting their consoles.

How much did your XBox cost?
What are you using it for now?
Are the cables needed for running the Xbox or just for the install?
Did you use the software or the hardware method for installing?

If the cables are what I think they are, they'd be used to load a
special save game onto a memory card. The save game uses an exploit in a
couple games (mech assault, 007) to install either the Linux loader, or
if you want to do more: the pheonix bios loader.

Once one of the loaders is installed, it replaces the xbox live menu
option and will be there until you decide to remove it. It's stored on
the harddrive so you only need the memory card/game once.

I think microsoft will take the exploitable games out of shops pretty
soon tho.
