I found gatos very useful when I had an old ati tv tuner card but not sure what it's like with newer cards. Should be better as when I had it working it was maintained by one person and now is supported by everyone with an interest. Ati cards in general at least get help from Ati themselves to provide linux drivers now but only with their newer chipsets. Ironically I went from Ati to nvidia & haven't had problems since. Before no 3D or lock ups all the time. The gatos (gatos.sf.net) project might be of some use to you .. Its aimed at using the multimedia extensions on ATI cards.
