avifile includes a library to help programs read and write compressed AVIs.

I'm guessing (perhaps wrongly) that you just need the basic library 
functions so that another program can use them.  If that is the case then 
./configure --disable-qt is the easiest way out.

Qt lives in /usr/lib/qt3 but you will probably be missing the header files 
which are needed to compile the qt utilities in avifile (look for a 
directory called "include").  SuSE normally splits these off into a 
separate package (qt-dev).  Look for it with yast, it is possible that it 
is not contained in the personal edition, in which case get it from a SuSE 
mirror site.

Compiling packages is useful experience, _expecially_ if problems arise, 
but don't let it get you down if it proves too complicated, the next one 
may be easier.
