Portmapper is the linux implmentation of the RPC protocol deamon.  Often
portscanners refer to it as SunRPC.

For unix/linux -> unix/linux NFS is your best bet by far in my opinion, although
you do sometimes get issues with differing implmentations, but these tend to be
fairly well documented. 

Just like samba, you don't want NFS/RPC pointing at the internet.
